As part of the Limbe Botanical and Zoological Gardens one of the programme is the Garden, Wildlife and Horticultural Services; under which operates the subprogramme - Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation. The aim of this subprogramme is to secure the ultimate survival of threatened and endangered species while raising and trying to change public attitudes in the Mount Cameroon region and beyond.
To that end, threatened primates from the Central African region are rescued and rehabilitated; public awareness raised to conserve Cameroon's unique wildlife; funds raised and donations secured to support the development of the institution. All these elements of this subprogramme are executed through the Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC).
In this section of our web site, is an excerpt from their annual report and other documents, as you read through you will notice their autonomy within part of the larger institution, LBZG. This further assists in their development and that of the LBZG.
LBZG continues to be encouraged by the unity of the staff and their relentless dedication towards the animals at The Centre. LBZG actively encourages the continued generosity of donors and funders towards this worthwhile wildlife work.
Introduction
Home to 31 species of African primates as well as a myriad of other wildlife, Cameroon is considered to be one of the world's 'hot spots' of bio-diversity, with high levels of endemic plants and animals. The Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC) provides one of the few opportunities to see many of these species and is thus an important tool for conservation education and awareness in Cameroon. Many of the animals at the centre are threatened or endangered primates, victims of habitat destruction, and the bush meat industry or pet trade. The LWC reflects both the richness and diversity of Cameroon's wildlife and the challenges facing conservation throughout Central Africa.
| A MESSAGE FROM THE INTERNATIONAL PRIMATE PROTECTION LEAGUE (IPPL) |
"IPPL recognizes monkeys and apes as intelligent, sensitive individuals whose welfare and actions depend upon human action. They cannot speak for themselves, we are their voice.
IPPL is dedicated to protecting all primates, whether wild or captive, anywhere in the world.
We commend the staff and supporters of the Limbe Wildlife Centre on yet another outstanding year. Their dedication and concern for Cameroon's wildlife is an inspirational example."
