Aim and Objectives of The Limbe Herbarium (SCA)

Aim:

The Limbe Herbarium (SCA) aims to develop and manage the biological reference collections as a supporting tool for the development and monitoring of biodiversity conservation strategies within the Mount Cameroon region and beyond.

Objectives:

In order to achieve its goal 'SCA' has the following objectives:

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive collection of biological specimens according to international standards of curation and classification.
  • Produce tools such as species checklists and distribution maps.
  • Produce manuals detailing the collection, processing and management of biological specimens.
  • Describe and publish new species discovered in the area in partnership with collaborating international herbaria.
  • Produce a series of Natural History Booklets for key biodiversity elements from the databases.
  • Develop and offer training courses in Field Botany and Tropical Herbarium Management Techniques to local institutions and conservation projects.
  • Render the information on the collections user-friendly and disseminate it in accordance with the Limbe Botanical and Zoological Gardens' policy on access to scientific information and benefit sharing.
  • Establish co-operation ties and collaborative research with other national/international herbaria and conservation projects in order to raise the status of The Limbe Herbarium (SCA).

The Limbe Herbarium (SCA) also maintains extensive databases to assist in the management of specimens and the analysis of forest inventory data namely;

  • Botanical Research and Herbarium Management System (BRAHMS)
  • Tree Mapping and Management (TREMA)

These databases allow easy assess to information and data-exchange with other institutions. The Limbe Herbarium includes a drying room, storing room and a mounting room. Its professional personnel include experts in botany, wildlife, forestry, butterflies and moths.

Internally, The Limbe Herbarium (SCA) collaborates with and contributes to other programmes including:

  • Environmental Monitoring through the delivery of the subprogrammes
    • Botanical Assessment Services
    • Biological Specimens Services
  • Conservation Technology Development
  • Garden, Wildlife and Horticultural Services.

Through internal collaboration between programmes, the institution is developing a broader, in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Mount Cameroon region both in terms of bio-diversity and socio-economics. Thereby assisting in conserving biodiversity and improving livelihoods.
