Introduction:
The Limbe Herbarium at The Limbe Botanical and Zoological Gardens is, known internationally by the acronym 'SCA' (Southern Cameroun). It was created along side the Botanic Garden in 1892 by German colonialists as a databank for preserved plant material from the uniquely rich and diverse flora of the Mount Cameroon region.
The Limbe Herbarium has the most diverse collection of afromontane and montane species in the West and Central African region. Limbe Herbarium (SCA) is developing from a geographical herbarium to serve more as a reference herbarium. Species distribution maps and regional flora data are being compiled from specimens received from the Mount Cameroon region and beyond.
The Herbarium houses over 30,000 specimens comprising 1,400 species, 700 genera and 260 families, as well as over 15,000 ecological specimens collected during forest inventories.
The collection also includes 2,322 butterfly species including two endemic to Mount Cameroon region - namely Chamehoe beckari and Papilio zororates. The Limbe Herbarium (SCA) stands out as one of the most valuable scientific resources for plant diversity assessment in the region.

The collection has been greatly expanded within the last decade with financial support from the British Government's DFID (Department For International Development). In collaboration with local and international specialists, the National Herbarium of Yaounde and the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew; The Limbe Herbarium staff have correctly named the majority of materials to species level.
