Palms are the plants with the longest and closest historic connection to humans. Today these plants are suffering from severe habitat loss especially the endemic Madagascan Palms. In order to preserve some of the very valuable genes that may be needed in the future to rescue this plant group, LBZG aim to establish a comprehensive collection of Pan African, Madagascan Palms and Cameroonian Palms.
This is an ongoing process and welcomes contributions from any interested Botanical Gardens or Palm Collectors. The current batch of Madagascan Palms was a donation from RBG Kew after a collection trip to Madagascar.
The Palm Collection has plants ranging from aquatic or swamp habitat (Raffia) to dry habitat (Wild Dates). The Madagascan Palms are mostly the threatened Dypsis spp. There are however, some common species of native, exotic and ornamental palms planted during the course of history of this Garden.
The Nipa Palm (Nypa fruticans), a swamp rattan (Eremospatha laurentii) with a strange erect stem and a Raffia population (swamp palms) form part of this collections as well as a rattan arboretum of Eremospatha wedlandiana, E. laurentii and E. hookeri and Lacosperma secundiflorum.
