Red-capped MangabeyThe first records made of the fauna of the Mount Cameroon area date as far back as the early twentieth century, when naturalists like William Serle, Preuss and Esentraut included records of birds, primates and other animals species in their trips or stay diaries. Some of these records bought attention to the very varied and interesting faunal assemblage, which has made this area a biodiversity hotspot of international repute.

Since the 1900s countless one-off studies and records have been made including specimen collections of birds, reptiles, mammals parts and insects, which today form part of renowned museums and private collections all over the world. Detailed information exists on some of the rarest tropical forest species of mammals, birds and butterflies in the world including distribution information on key species of butterflies like Papilio antimarcus, Papilio zororastris and Cameohoe backeri.

During the last five year, sub-programme co-ordinated faunal information collection and management for the Mount Cameroon region. Models for the reconstruction of an integrated and complete picture of the biodiversity of the Mount Cameroon region have been developed to include fauna, flora, their habitats and those people who use these natural resources.
